Ergonomic packing workstations for efficient logistics processes

For the Leipzig site, Kern Studer implemented a comprehensive, bespoke workstation solution for momox’s packaging logistics. 82 ergonomic packing tables, mobile folding-box storage units and custom-designed shelving create efficient and flexibly organised workflows.

Client background and challenges

For the momox Services site at the Old Airport in Leipzig, the packing workstations in the logistics area were to be comprehensively equipped and tailored to the specific operational processes. What was required was not simply a standard solution, but a workstation concept that combined ergonomics, functionality, storage space and the provision of packaging materials.

A particular requirement was the customised design of the workstations. A total of 82 packing tables were planned in two mirror-image configurations, each comprising 41 workstations. The tables had to be designed so that essential equipment such as monitors, label printers, scales, adhesive tape and other tools could be arranged ergonomically directly at the workstation.

The organisation of the packaging materials was also an integral part of the overall concept. This required mobile folding box magazines in various sizes as well as custom-made shelving units. For one type of shelving unit, the height was adjusted from 2160 to 1980 mm during the course of the project and a new sample was prepared for approval.

Solution and result

Based on the ERGO-Basic modular workstation system, Kern Studer developed a packing station solution tailored to momox’s requirements. The 82 packing tables, each with a work surface measuring 1250 × 750 mm, were preset to a working height of 960 mm and fitted with ESD worktops and additional ESD storage surfaces.

The workstations feature perforated profiles for flexibly positionable attachments, as well as shelves with a load-bearing capacity of up to 50 kg. These were supplemented, amongst other things, by fully extendable trays for label printers, monitor mounts with gas springs, mounts for scales, adhesive tape dispensers, document and bottle holders, and ESD earthing components.

Beneath the worktop, pull-out multi-purpose bins in a custom blue colour and additional storage surfaces ensure a structured organisation directly at the packing station. The mirrored designs allow for an arrangement tailored to each individual workstation.

Mobile folding box magazines were also used to supply the shipping cartons. In addition to 83 compact magazines measuring 650 × 590 mm, 246 larger magazines measuring 1340 × 590 mm were provided. Four swivel castors, two of which are braked, allow for flexible positioning within the work area.

The setup was complemented by custom-made wooden shelving units in various designs. This resulted in a comprehensive workstation and supply solution that brings the individual functions of the packing process together in one space and makes the equipment clearly accessible at each point of use.
